Development [edit]

The show was officially renewed by Play a trick on for a fourth flavor on May ten, 2017.[33] Just like the 2d and third seasons, the fourth season besides carried a new subtitle for the season: A Dark Knight.[x]

Writing [edit]

The producers revealed that the season would be based on the comic book stories Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Year One. According to executive producer John Stephens, the season would not consist of "direct adaptations", but "loose interpretations" of the comic book serial.[34] Ben McKenzie explained that the construction for the season would exist "the first is more than Long Halloween, our version of that, and the terminate is more Year One."[35] According to Stephens, the show would handle a horror-oriented direction on the season: "At the very outset of the season, Penguin has solidified his control upon Gotham like never before. Where he'south kind of unionized crime. And Scarecrow comes in to basically reintroduce fear into Gotham and to remind people that the night is still scary out there. And we're really going to fashion, especially Episode ii, most a horror motion picture episode where we really get to see Scarecrow. I recollect he'southward like purely terrifying. Imagine, rather than the other versions of Scarecrow out there—because there are a lot of different versions—what if yous but really tell Scarecrow every bit a horror movie? Considering he could be scary as hell."[36] [37] Executive producer Danny Cannon stated, "When the studio asks you lot to tone dorsum because it's too scary, you lot know you've washed something right!"[6]

Regarding Bruce'southward commencement of vigilantism, McKenzie explained that "We are definitely leaning into Bruce, having learned some of the skills to be a vigilante, now really attempting information technology. Now, nosotros have a long, long way to get earlier he can realistically be Batman, and then there will be many stumbles and falls – and regressions back to being a kid at times – but Gordon will eventually become aware of what he's doing and that will bring them against each other."[35] David Mazouz too added, "Bruce really is taking on this vigilante persona and all the things that continue with that. Whether information technology be creating another persona, a public persona, that's also definitely going to be a major part of Bruce'due south journey this twelvemonth. His relationship as this other person. Batman is coming. Absolutely." Mazouz besides stated that he was worried the writers could pull dorsum some aspects from Batman, deeming it "also fast" just he was glad it didn't end. He said that Bruce would have the "Batman persona" this flavor.[38] [39] [twoscore] [41] [42] Cannon also explained that Bruce will be seen "every bit the emerging threat he is."[43] Alexander Siddig stated that his character volition seek to make Bruce his heir and volition "do annihilation he can to get his easily on him, to dispense him into what [Ra's] wants him to be." He likewise claimed that the season is "a season so far of extremes."[44]

Talking about his character, McKenzie stated, "Comparatively, possibly he's in a amend place than some of these other truly evil, evil people." But as the flavor will be with him dealing with Cobblepot, Gordon "doesn't have a lot of expert options. He has to either fight him directly or notice allies to fight Penguin—surrogates to fight Penguin—which leads him down a dark path. So, that's kind of the mode we start for him in season 4."[45] According to Stephens, "We're going to encounter Jim make, in some ways, big steps toward I guess what you would phone call the commissionership. Just also we're going to see Jim, in his quest to salvage the city, cantankerous different ethical lines than he always did before. It'due south going to bring him to an ethical nadir that we haven't seen him at, and information technology's going to exist told through the context of a human relationship that he has with Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Don Falcone, who's played past Crystal Reed this year. And that's going to be a really compelling and interesting relationship."[46] Sean Pertwee as well stated that the flavour will as well explore Alfred's mysterious past "indirectly".[47]

McKenzie made his writing debut on the episode "The Demon'south Head", after previously directing the third-season episode "These Delicate and Night Obsessions". McKenzie went to Los Angeles to work on the writers' room to pause the story and then become back to New York Urban center and finish many drafts. He explained, "I've been fiddling effectually with writing for a long time, simply I'd never written an episode of television, so it was quite a learning process." He as well added that, "From being on a set, the directing came fairly naturally. Information technology was challenging, just there were a lot of things that I understood about directing just from observing, just from watching director'southward piece of work. Writing oft takes place backside-the-scenes. Physical production is not privy to how scripts come out... I wasn't so familiar with that process of breaking a story, of starting with a story document, and so an outline, and then a draft; it was informative".[48] [49]

For the 2d half of the season, Cameron Monaghan stated that "We're borrowing very heavily from some of the most iconic Batman storylines. I call up that they're deep enough, and they show where its actually splitting that duality and start totally embracing the main arcs. I call back that we did a little bit in season iii to bring it into The Killing Joke."[l] He also added that the program for the last episodes is to adapt Batman: No Human being's Land, stating, "Nosotros're really getting into it this year. I call back the manner that the story escalates is something that shifts and is not anything the show has washed before. I think it'southward going to be a really unique experience. Specially past the past few episodes, it'southward going to be really... it's pretty insane."[51]

Casting [edit]

With the exception of Bridegroom Samuel and Michael Chiklis, all main actors from the previous season returned for the show, with Maggie Geha existence downgraded to invitee star.[52] Crystal Reed joined the serial in July 2022 in the series regular role of Sofia Falcone.[3] Alexander Siddig was promoted to the principal cast. In September 2017, Michael Cerveris joined the show as Lazlo Valentin / Professor Pyg, in a multi-episode role.[6] Cerveris stated, "Professor Pyg is a bright and chameleon-similar person who has a highly developed sense of what's correct and wrong—information technology merely might non exist a sense of right and wrong that corresponds with everybody else's."[53] He also added that, "When they [the writers] had somebody who played Sweeney Todd, they knew the direction they wanted to become... [Broadway fans who don't scout Gotham] might requite it a look only because of that, and observe that they have a new favorite show."[54] Regarding the Dollotrons, Cerveris stated, "You lot know how much he's liked the Pyg in the comics, but I would say that his focus in Gotham is more on things to do with Gotham and with the city and with Jim Gordon. He's certainly is the manipulative character, and certainly, y'all know, is trying to go people to do stuff whether they know why they're doing it or not. But, that's sort of exclusive. His whole reason for existing is not the Dollotrons."[55] He described the character as having "a Hannibal Lecter-ish quality."[56] He as well jokingly added that he couldn't eat salary "because I but can't bring myself to eat my little friends."[57] Donal Logue stated, "We have Michael Cerveris coming in and playing Professor Pyg and he's such an incredibly gifted player and, as happens a lot, the gentlest and well-nigh gifted of artistic souls can play the darkest, creepiest human beings known to literature or pic."[58]

Too, the character of Tommy Elliot was also set to return to the show, having appeared in the episode "The Mask". However, co-executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt added, "Manifestly when Tommy Elliot is discussed, in that location's always is that Hush storyline. That is something that nosotros've discussed. Correct now, we're kind of still feeling that out. It could be something on the horizon, just I tin can't say for sure."[59] [60] Also, Peyton List was bandage equally a new iteration of Ivy Pepper.[61] Co-ordinate to Bryan Wynbrandt, "The change was all based on the idea that she'south continuing to evolve to go more of the Ivy from the comic books and what we really enjoyed. In this third evolution y'all're going to see a really self possessed, really scary and driven version of the Ivy character, who is intent on kind of making the world in the image she sees it should be, which is the green world. The world where the plants rule and people are an afterwards thought."[62]

As a concept McKenzie wished to explore, the fourth season was ready to bring dorsum the actor Charlie Tahan as Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow,[63] who portrayed the grapheme on the first-season episodes: "The Fearsome Dr. Crane" and "The Scarecrow".[4] [64] A trailer was screened on the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con that showed Crane donning a new costume under the Scarecrow persona.[36] McKenzie explained: "So nosotros met his father Dr Crane in Season i. So we've taken our time; we're gonna come back now to his son. You know, in circumstances probably non best described now, his son takes on his begetter's drapery and becomes the fully-realized Scarecrow. It'due south bang-up. We're able to apply this sort of fear toxin that Scarecrow is able to summon. We're completely unafraid—or mayhap afraid but we withal persist–in expanding the universe and our capabilities."[65] Tahan commented on his character, "He's sort of trying to build an ground forces with this toxin. Scarecrow might start brainwashing people. I'm non exactly sure what his endgame is—I don't even know if he knows. He has this revelation that he doesn't have to fright fear."[66] However, due to Tahan's commitment to the serial Ozark, the function ended up recast with David W. Thompson, who portrayed him in the second half of the season.[67]

When asked about Jerome Valeska's return in the season, Stephens stated, "What I will say most Jerome is that Jerome is in Arkham right at present, and when you retrieve nigh Arkham's record of keeping people locked up, we will probably see him once again before the end of the year."[68] In September 2017, Stephens explained, "You're totally gonna run into him this year. Yous're gonna see him in a new position this year", also teasing that Jerome would be an ally to Penguin on the season.[69] Ben McKenzie said, "Jerome is ane of our near dear characters. The thought hither was to really requite the audition more fourth dimension to enjoy and savor [Cameron Monaghan'southward] operation."[lxx] Regarding the partnership between Jerome and Penguin, Robin Lord Taylor said "Y'all take Jerome, who is chaos, and yous take Oswald, who is control. So you can imagine, at that place are ways that those tin can integrate, but at the same time they're opposites."[71] Stephens too added that Fish Mooney is "gone for good", proverb, "At present, that one was it. At a certain point, you gotta say 'Definitely.' People die at a certain point, and that'southward the second or third time they die [on Gotham]"[72]

Filming [edit]

Filming for the season began on June 20, 2017, at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn, New York.[73] In January 2018, it was appear that Ben McKenzie would direct an episode after making his directional debut the previous season.[74] It was afterwards revealed that he would be directing the 16th episode, titled "One of My Iii Soups".[75] Production on the flavour officially wrapped in belatedly March 2018.[76]
